5 Years: Remembering and Moving Forward

Saturday, July 28th marked the 5 year anniversary of my Dad’s passing.

It seemed oddly fitting that I spent most of last week out in the Black Hills.  It happened to be that the interns my family sponsors in Dad’s memory were doing their final presentations on Thursday.  We made our annual family trip out West to honor Dad by attending the presentations.  I always feel a bit awkward about all the attention we receive when we go, but I suppose that’s just a bit of my Dad showing himself in me.  He wasn’t ever one for the spotlight really, and even after his diagnosis he just wanted our lives to continue on as normal as possible.

I was partially left to my own devices while I was there, which I secretly sort of love.  Anymore, feeling like you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle of everyday life seems to be a rarity for people, but I think it’s important to be okay being alone.  If you’re going to be stuck in a place without a car, I would strongly recommend Lead, SD.  I had what amounted to about 24 hours essentially on my own without a car.  I was staying with Lil B, but unfortunately she had to work both Thursday and Friday.  I spent the time reading, hiking with her Momma, and generally just enjoying the outdoors.  I  had a wedding and bridesmaid duties in Rapid City on Saturday, in case you were confused as to why my Momma and Sister left me in the Hills. 🙂

Cute little twins and their momma just off the trail

Friday morning, while waiting for The Engineer to arrive in town and the start of the wedding activities, I went for a 6 mile jog/hike on a new trail that runs between Lead and Deadwood.  The trail is gorgeous and is perched high above both cities with stunning views of the mountains and hills surrounding the towns.  Out here on the prairie, we would say the towns are nestled in valleys.  Out in the West…they don’t have valleys…they have gulches.  They are sharper, more severe, and create a much more nerve racking albeit amazeballs view when you stand on the edge.  It really can’t even be described in a way that does it any manner of justice, and my photography skills will never capture the true feeling of standing on the rugged edge of nature.

I’m not much of a runner honestly, but while pounding my way down the pine lined trail, I think I finally began to understand why my Dad liked to run so much.  Normally, I consider the thin mountain air to be a major struggle factor when I try and exercise out in the Hills.  In fact, Thursday afternoon I tried to jog up a large hill and across Lead to the grocery store…..I didn’t even make it halfway up the hill before I was doubled over and trying to pull all of the oxygen out of air that seemed too thin for my lungs to even hold.

For probably the first time ever, I didn’t feel like I was struggling to get enough oxygen to fuel my legs down the trail.  It was cool, breezy, and clear….and I just ran.  The air out in the Hills has a specific smell about it.  It’s pine, but such a subtle, delicate pine that you’d have a hard time recreating it.  Take every Christmas Tree candle you’ve ever smelled and toss it out the window.  It isn’t like that at all….not that I don’t enjoy a good pine scented candle during the holidays!  There’s a slight sweetness to the air, but I find that I only notice it when I focus on it.  It’s something to be discovered and savored, and is probably lost on people who don’t take time to pause and enjoy the surroundings.

Before I’d even realized I had ran almost 2 miles straight…..with brief pauses to carefully traverse down a particularly steep or gravely section of trail.  I’m no running expert, and I’m certainly not well versed in trail running.  Better safe than sorry….sorry being hands and knees scraped up and full of dirt, gravel, and pine needles.

I RARELY…..EVER…..MOSTLY NEVER RUN MORE THAN A MILE AT A TIME.

It was glorious.  Honestly, for how ever brief a time I think I really understood what my Dad always saw in running.  It cleared my mind and was just such a nice time to reflect.  It was easy…I just ran.  I’ve only ever felt that way one other time running, that I can remember.  The first Father’s Day after Dad passed I headed to my townhome’s gym and ran a 5K….but it didn’t feel natural, I’m sure it was fueled purely on sadness, anger, and stress.  This run felt different, it felt natural….like I was put out there specifically to go on this run, and have this time, and feel a connection to my Dad that I haven’t felt in a while.  That’s the thing about being raised by parents who taught me to move forward, even in times of difficulty, and to never quit.  I sometimes  forget that moving forward doesn’t mean I can’t pause and take time to reflect.

I’m not sure when I’ll have another run that feels comfortable and easy.  I might not ever, and I came to terms with the fact that running just isn’t my jam a long time ago.  But, I might try again next time I’m out in the Hills on a high up mountain trail.  Worst thing that happens is it’s horrible and I end up walking….which out there isn’t all that bad either.

forest

I ended up doing more walking than jogging most of the way back to Lead once I got to the end of the trail in Deadwood.  Turns out that the whole trail, even the “flat” parts had an ever so slight downhill trajectory….which suddenly explained why going to Deadwood felt so glorious, and why going back to Lil B’s house felt less than stellar most of the time.  Also, about a mile from the end of my run/walk I got distracted and forgot to check where my feet were landing.  I took a rather large rock right to the side and/or arch of my left foot and ended up with a rather swollen and bruised foot.  Still not the worst thing….I ended up walking  back to Lil B’s house and came upon a cute little buck in velvet hanging out on the edge of town.

So close I almost could have touched him!

Outdoor Adventure

A couple weeks ago Lil B bought herself a pop up camper, so of course we all had to go test it out! I snagged what appeared to be the only open campsite in the Black Hills for the weekend, and The Engineer and I, his sister and brother in law, and Lil B and her girls all met up to have some fun in the sun and a few days without cellphone service!

36869998_10155653731548097_3180075274372907008_n.jpg

Lucky for The Engineer and I it didn’t rain, though for awhile on Saturday night it did look a bit dark and stormy.  We were just in a tent……a small tent once you put all our stuff……and Scout a Roo and her things…..into the tent.  The tent came from the premier retailer of outdoor equipment…..Menards :/

I wasn’t sure it would actually keep us dry if it needed to. I’m not sure that I’d want to be in that tent for anything other than a warm, sunshiney weekend….but for the $20 The Engineer spent on it it got the job done. Scout spent more time in the tent than anyone.  Having only briefly recovered from a 4th of July filled with death booms courtesy of our neighbors, the crackle of a nice campfire was more than her delicate nerves could take.  She spent the first night wedged between the tent wall and the air mattress, nose pointed as far from the fire as she could get.

My purchase for the trip was a percolator, and I was maybe more excited about it than a normal person should get! Come to find out, Lil Bs camper had several percolators stowed away inside, but better to have too much coffee than not enough! Actually, Lil Bs camper came with all sorts of forgotten camping accessories: roasting sticks, veggie roasting baskets…..it seemed like anything anyone had forgotten Lil B could scrounge up in her camper!  The cost of everything that was left inside the kitchen of her camper maybe totals more than she paid for the camper….it’s in great shape for it’s age and a bottomless supply of all things outdoor adventure related.  She found a great little buy!

Saturday morning we just made coffee on a camp stove……it wasn’t really my ideal camping experience, but it was fast and the girls desperately wanted to walk down to the lake. We all spent the day drinking and relaxing in the shade on the shore.  Well, the girls swam, and I did take my newly purchased giant unicorn float for a lap around the lake, but mostly we hung out and enjoyed the breeze. Our campsite, while it did have plenty of shape, did have a severe lack of breeze. Even Scout got in the camping spirit with several unforced dips into the lake. She doesn’t like to swim, but did spend some time walking around in chest deep water investigating things, so I was pretty proud! I became less proud when she discovered that campfires create lovely, crunchy, charcoal cube snackies and proceeded to hoover them up at an alarming pace.  Plus side it got her over her fear of campfires and she spent all of Saturday night out by the fire with us.  Down side…..she pooped…..a lot. :/

Floating away from life’s bullshit on my mystical unicorn Misty!

I actually started a fire to make dinner that night, even though everyone said, “Just use the camp stoves, it’ll be so much easier.” No! We hauled The Engineer’s Grandma’s cast iron pan all the way out there, and God created cast iron so that mankind could cook directly over a smokey fire in nature!  So I made deer nachos over a campfire and they were amazeballs!  I think I’m just more down to rough it than maybe The Engineer is.  I’m willing to work a bit harder for some extra smokey flavoring!

Sunday morning I was the first one up, and I was determined to use my percolator over a fire……so I did!

And then……I made bacon….and it was fantastic!  I think coffee tastes better slow brewed over a fire, but I will admit it does take some time. Having only used a percolator once, I spent several minutes in a panic and readjusting the pot over the fire being quite sure we had just experienced beginners luck the day before.  Suddenly…..percolation…..coffee was within my gasp! And, I only burnt one pan of bacon before I figured out the proper fire to pan placement!!

We finished up our camping adventure with a trip to Lewie’s for beer and a burger for lunch, and I almost killed The Enginner making him hike up to Seth Bullock’s gravesite…..plus side he made his activity goal for the day in his new Apple Watch! I’m just trying to be helpful like that!  All in all it was pretty successful for our first camping trip!  The tent survived, Scout concurred some fears, no one got food poisoning, the camper didn’t roll spontaneously down the hill, and there were no major injuries!

Shenanigans and Malarky

I spent another long weekend in the Black Hills last weekend to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with some of my favorite people and foods!  Although, I did switch up the food choices significantly this trip, which caused my coworker to wonder alarmingly……”Were you not feeling well or something while you were out there!?!?”  I assure you, I was fine…..didn’t even wake up with a hangover any of the mornings!  Whoop whoop for partying like an adult!!

1

First things first, I’m not going to attempt a 6 hour drive without a coffee the size of my head.  Yes, I know, this is just going to cause potty breaks somewhere down the line….something my father would be very disappointed in me doing….but desperate times call for desperate measures sometimes.  Luckily, Yankton entered the 21st century years ago with a drive through coffee shop…..much to my cousin’s snobby dismay.  Maybe more on this later, it’s not the theme of today’s story!

Upon my somewhat tardy arrival to Rapid City…..mostly due to potty breaks and extreme gas use due to hurricane force head winds…..I proceeded directly to my beautiful Russian Bestie’s house!  We were starving, so I didn’t even really stop to say hello to her beautiful, baby girl!  The sushi was calling our names!  We tried Jane’s favorite place, but there was apparently no one home.  The sign said OPEN…..but the doors were all locked up.  So, off to the new mall we went for Fuji and some baby clothes shopping!  I haven’t had an oppertunity to see the Russian in a bit over a year, so it was so good to just catch up and hang out like we did in college.  Ugh college…..the good ol days I guess!

3

To quote my Russian, “Friends are like bras: close to your heart and there for support!”

I’m usually not much on babies, but the Russian and her Hubby have a very cute, very happy little one!  She even let me hold her for awhile without doing that ‘sensing the fear’ thing that bees and babies seem to have in common in response to me!  Plus she’s got a super stellar wardrobe that I had a fun time shopping around and adding too.  In addition to sushi and baby cuddles I got to try some wine from Moldova and a fancy Russian cake that basically had the taste and consistency of tiramisu without the addition of espresso.  All in all, a great way to spend a sunny Friday afternoon!

Om nom nom nom!

After shopping and snacks I headed up in the Hills to Lil B’s house.  We initially had grand plans of getting Lewie’s…..but no one ended up feeling hungry.  Actually….I didn’t even make it out to Lewie’s this trip, which was a bit sad but I mean there’s always next time I guess!  I spent the night drinking. chatting, dancing around, and attempting to deter the girls from wanting to do makeover parties on my face.  My makeup brushes still haven’t recovered from the last blush heavy makeover! 🙂

Blurry pic….but there’s wine, so life’s good!

Bright eyed and bushy tailed….ready to start the day.  If you look closely at the picture, you’ll notice the BFB joining in on the coffee times!

Saturday morning Lil B and I had some nice quiet coffee time.  I suppose that’s what happens when you can hear the kiddos playing in their room until way past their usual bedtime.  Nothing wrong with letting them sleep in on a Saturday I suppose.  Eventually the littlest one climbed out of the blanket fort style sleeping situation they built for some breakfast.  This was shortly followed by all of us going out to meet Heinz for brunch, and much to my surprise…..the littlest one pounded down a second breakfast of toast and an egg.  Child after my own heart right there….no such thing as too much food….particularly breakfast foods!

I will say, nothing much beats milling around and waiting for a table at the Hickok House to get a heaping plate of chile rellenos, hashbrowns, and eggs.  I’m not sure how they make the chili that they smother those little cheese stuffed puppies in, but I need to know.  Do you ever have that urge to get a job at a restaurant just so you can figure out some of the secret recipes and then quit?!  No…..!?  Maybe that’s just me.  The peppers seemed to be stuffed with extra cheese this time…..which made them especially amazeballs!

Saturday night we finally got up to some shenanigans, which may or may not have involved drinking in the street….which is allowed on St. Patrick’s Day…..and getting kicked out of a bar.  Now, I wasn’t the one who was kicked out, but when you’re out with your people and one of you gets told to leave…..proper protocol dictates that you all leave. I wasn’t in the bar to see the events that led to removal….I was of course in the street getting beer…..but I did hear about it the rest of the night.  Drama…..drama…..drama…..I tell you what.  St. Patrick’s Day in Deadwood is a bit like New Orleans all the time…..just constant booze and beer all day long, wherever you want to be drinking it.  It’s fine in small doses, but honestly isn’t a life I’d want any part of in the long term.  Does that mean I’m becoming old and finally growing up?!

Sunday afternoon I had lunch at the Loud American in Sturgis…..which I haven’t been to in years.  So long in fact, that the whole thing had been remodeled since the last time I was there.  Apparently it’s been done for at least 2 years….clearly I need to get out way more often.  I was also somewhat bummed that they have taken chicken tip tacos off the menu…..I guess things can’t always stay the way they were in the good ol’ days!

Sunday night, Lil B and I decided to take the girls to Spearfish for Taco Bell and Beauty and the Beast.  Don’t judge us on our Taco Bell habits…..it’s Lil Bs favorite fast food, and I have no problems at all pounding down a chalupa or two.  So bad….but so so good!  The new movie was good, although maybe a little long due to the addition of some new songs.  IDK, maybe I’m just an old school purist…..but I just wanted a live action version of the OG cartoon…..not some new and improved version.  Oh well, it was still very good, although it meant that the girls got home past bedtime on a school night.  Whoopsy!

Movie night prep….which maybe caused me to teach a kindergartener how to read a PBR can….which maybe caused her to run around the house singing, “Pabst….Blue Ribbon Beer!” for several minutes…..which maybe caused Lil B and I to giggle about her possibly receiving a call from school the following day.      This….this is why I shouldn’t be trusted with children!

Them Taco Bell Snap Chat moments….

Monday morning Lil B and I got the girls off to school, stopped and got Starbucks, and then headed off to college.  Yes….I snuck into Anatomy class with B at BHSU.  Now this was weird for several reasons…..firstly, as a tried and true, dyed in the wool SDSMT heritage student, it felt wrong……very wrong to be on the BHSU campus.  It’s just not a thing that’s done honestly.  Second, I was less than impressed with her professor.  She assures me he’s very good and that this was just a test review day so he wasn’t really teaching…..but I’m skeptical honestly.  Thirdly, ALL THE THE GIRLS WERE TINY AND TOTALLY ADORABLE!  Was I that cute and adorable when I was in college?!  I’m trying to think back and remember that I was, that we all were, but I really don’t think that’s the way it was.  Maybe I can blame the fact that we all wore actual clothes…..jeans and shirts….and not just “athleisure” wear and maybe thats why?  High waisted yoga pants will do slimming wonders…..so honestly I think that’s what I’m just gonna go with.  I could have looked cute and little….fashion just wasn’t on my side!

8

Lil B’s handwriting….vastly superior to mine!

I spent most of the rest of the day with Lil B at the hair salon while she got her hair done.  It was nice to just hang out and chat some more, plus there was the added benefit of making her go to Subway with her head all full of foils.  Ahhhh small town living….you’d never think of doing it at home, but out there, stuff like that just feels normal.  I ended up headed home much later than normal, but that’s fine by me.  Extra time spent in the Hills is never bad time.  Plus, now that Spring has sprung, the threat of driving home in the dark on crappy snow packed roads has mostly left us.  Now that I’ve written that, I’m sure we will get some sort of late season snow.  I’m sorry….don’t hate me.

It was, like all my trips West, a very good time.  Even though I didn’t get my jalapeño bacon cheese burger or phillies….I got steak tips, sushi, and Taco Bell and that works just fine for me!  I didn’t spend any of my time nursing a hangover which is nice but also slightly depressing at the same time.  Some of my best times bonding with my girl friends have been the times we’ve all been lying on beds or the couch hungover, laughing, and feeling like absolute butt hole.  It’s how we spent more Sunday’s than I care to talk about in college, and how we spend a rare weekend together now.  I say weekend now, because those mid 20 something hangovers linger!  If you’ve had one you know…..it’s not longer hours of hangover….it’s days!

Birth Control 101

Now, I’m not sure that that’s an accurate description of my weekend, but Lil B informs me that it is.  I’ve been in the Hills with Lil B and her girls since Thursday night.  We’ve done all sorts of things, but it’s been a more adult weekend then most I spend out here. No concerts, bar hopping, or hangovers this time around.  This time we did “mom” things…..but there was wine, because there is always wine!

Friday morning, we dropped the girls off at school before going to lunch and doing some shopping.  You can’t drink and do face masks at night if you don’t have masks…..so we needed a trip to the store for the necessities.

img_7561

Lunch may or may not have involved a drink…..what else are two girls supposed to do on a Friday afternoon!?

img_7562

Our “Mom Line” school pick up game is strong!

Friday night we made spaghetti and cookies because growing swimmers need good carb fuel for swim meets. In possibly my least favorite part of the weekend, we did makeovers before bed. The girls were very concerned about my ability to find a boyfriend, so they decided to glam me up. I had glitter in my eyeballs and lipgloss formed a nice film all over my teeth and the inside of my mouth.

img_7568

Boyfriend hunting pro tip…..wear blush as foundation and blind them with glitter everywhere else!

Saturday and Sunday, Lil B and I spent the mornings reliving our youths by becoming swim team moms. Gone are the days of our racing suits when someone else organized our snacks and got us out of bed for weekend meets. We were now those moms, and we rocked it! Nothing got lost, left behind, or forgotten, and we weren’t late. Her daughter did awesome for her first swim meet!

img_7573

I love the calm that is a flat pool before the meet starts.

img_7585

We of course had to eat some of my favorite foods while I was out. Lewis’s burgers on Saturday after the swim meet, a fresh stock of Philly Ted’s, and ice cream tonight to celebrate a successful first swim meet!  We also swung past the BFB’s parents house to chat and drop off some dilly beans and poppy seed bread. Poppa got us all copies of the Reckless Kelly concert set list for Christmas, and I’m pretty excited about it!! 🙂

Tomorrow, I’ll make one last swing through the “Mom Line” to drop the girls off at school, and then it will be home to pick up my Scout-a-Roo!

I still don’t know that this weekend counts as birth control, but I do know that I have a huge appreciation for how hard my bestie works at making sure life is good and organized for her kiddos.  Mommas, especially single mommas, need to give themselves more credit for all the hard work and sacrifices they make for their kids!!

Wild West Country Weekend

I know I didn’t post a blog last week…..oopsy. But, I had a busy week. Monday I spent just over $400 on getting the caps on my broken front teeth fixed.  The plus side is I discovered my teeth are the whitest shade that they have that’s considered “natural”…shade A1, the downside is I had to spend that much money to realize that glorious little mood booster.  I packed a weeks worth of work into two days, and then I packed and fled the East side humidity with the Bitch Faced Bestie for some cooler weather and country fun!

THURSDAY

First things first…..the Terrainy needed an oil change. So I went to the dealership at 8am for my scheduled appointment for a 60,000 mile check and oil change.  Two hours later……I think all they did was change the oil and rotate the tires?!?!  So thanks for that dealership!  The delay lead to some snarky bestie texts…..

So I ran across town, picked up the BFB, we stopped for coffee, and we were off!

Found this Airstream at the gas station in Kadoka……I need it!

We arrived at Lil B’s house, unpacked the car, and the headed to the BFB’s parents house to make dinner.  I successfully cooked my first pork chops and learned that steamed broccoli dunked in the creamy zip of Miracle Whip is a thing.  I have to say….it’s a thing I don’t understand, but it’s still a thing!

After dinner it was back to Lil B’s house for a night of bestie drinking and Netflix!  I think we watched the same comedy special on Netflix 2-3 times over the weekend…..because it’s epic.  Lil B and I had already seen it, and we watched it again several times because that’s just how good she is!

FRIDAY

Sleeping in was followed by coffee and the decision that maybe we needed breakfast.  Breakfast when in Lead/Deadwood is an obvious choice for me….The Hickok House!  Basically the general flow of my trips to the West are me just eating my way around town, and then coming home poor and with a severe case of gut rot.  You’d think I would learn….I never do and I never care!

Chili Rellenos, ham steak, and rancher breakfast.  I don’t really know what else needs to be said about this photo honestly!  Seriously….get in my belly!  (Bonus points if you can guess which breakfast is mine!)

After breakfast we decided to run up to Spearfish for some groceries and a coffee pot.  Lil B only has a Keurig, and we decided that for the group of us that was just sorta inconvenient.  We did end up getting a coffee pot, but we forgot filters so the whole thing was sorta useless.  I did however manage to get pulled over on the highway to Spearfish going 70 in a 65 zone…..which is total crap!  I got off with just a warning and some severe giggles from the girls in the car.

NEED FOR SPEED!

Taking these two to Walmart is a bit like herding cats.  It’s fine, I’ve done it before and I know what I’m in for, but we get a lot of strange looks as we wander the aisles giggling about something that only we three find funny.  Case in point…..this glorious screen shot of our self check out session.

Yes, that does say BJ ice cream, yes we giggled like small children about it, and no I didn’t buy any BJ ice cream.  It’s Ben and Jerry’s for anyone who’s now concerned about our taste in frozen treats.

Friday afternoon was spent with B’s little girls before we had to get ready to head to the first of two concerts for the weekend.  The girls got pedicures, makeup, and fancy braids before they were off the Grandma’s house for the night.  It rained all day Friday and was surprisingly cold….and of course I forgot to pack jeans.  Thank goodness for boots and long sleeve flannel!

Round One: The Eli Young Band

SATURDAY

We dragged a poor little hungover Lil B outta bed and hauled her off to breakfast at the BFB’s parents house.  She perked up like a daisy in the cold air and had her head out the back window of my car like a dog on the drive over, but once inside slowly whittled into a sleeping pile on the couch again.  Oh well…..more toast for me!

Sometimes a cup of coffee just speaks to you…..

After breakfast it was more lounging at B’s house with the girls before lunch.  I told you, all I do is eat when I’m there!

When you haven’t showered yet, so you obviously need makeover help.

The makeovers went fine…..we thought…..and everyone was hungry so we started getting ready for lunch.  I took off my lipgloss which was nearly up to my nose, and I told the BFB to blend out her new smokey eye a bit more, but generally we thought we looked ok.  That was until we got into the car.  I had gold eyeshadow from eyebrow to cheek bone essentially, and the BFB had raccoon eyes of glitter.

image

You can’t really see the makeup it on the pic….but these are our faces once we realized our “makeover” situation.  BFB had to try and remove glitter from her face with a bandaid because glitter is like herpes and once you have it it never really leaves you!

Undaunted by my new Goldmember style eye makeup we headed to Lewie’s.  Sadly, in what I can only assume is some sort of post-rally style snafu, they had no tap beer.  You might not understand why this is sad, but if you drink enough tap beer there you get free beer.  I’m halfway to a free beer, and as we all know, free beer is the best beer!  We also had to sit inside as the patio was full.  This meant we couldn’t hide our glamour behind sunglasses….which was a bit awkward.

image

Heaven in a basket…..there were also cheeseballs, but those got eaten first!  And for those who are curious, that’s a standard Lewie’s cheeseburger with bacon and jalapeños.  Always add the bacon and jalapeños!

When you decide it’s more fun to not have to ride home with your Momma! (We hadn’t left the parking lot yet, so no one freakout please!)

After lunch, everyone was in need of a nap so we went home for a living room style sleep over.  I didn’t nap super well because I was unaware of how much children fidget around and make noise during nap time, but any nap is better than no nap.  Nap time was followed up with another mini makeup session for the little ones and a trip back to Grandma’s for them so the big girls could get ready for the night out.

Round Two: Reckless Kelly

I could have touched a Braun brother!!!  Like literally just reached right out and touched them!  I did get handed a set list after the show and got it signed by the band.  I gave it to Papa G because, A….he got us tickets to the concerts and t-shirts for Round One, and B….he’s got a music room where it will be much more appreciated than anywhere in my house I could put it.

Needless to say we were pretty drained after two nights of party, but we did all manage to bum around for a bit once we got home and eat ice cream and watch Netflix.  At our cores, we are all sorta lazy sweatpants and Netflix sorta girls….we just like to do it in a full face of makeup because ya know…..we be fancy!

SUNDAY

The drive home…..honestly nothing is worse than the drive home after a weekend of party in the West.  You’re tired, you probably stink, and the time change does not work in your favor.  We loaded up the Terrainy, stopped at the BFF’s parents one last time so they could send the entire town of Lead home with her in the car, stopped in Rapid so I could get my reload of Philly Ted’s to squirrel in the freezer and we were off on the open road.  I took no pictures, because again…..it’s exhausting and mind numbing.  We swung down to my Momma’s to pick up my Scout baby, and then it was back north towards home.

All in all a good girl’s weekend full of fun bestie shenanigans…..maybe too many shenanigans.  By definition though, can you ever really have too many shenanigans?  Is that even a thing?!

A Weekend in the West

I made a quick trip out to the Black Hills this weekend. The original plan was to bring the Main Squeeze so that he could meet my West River people, but he had a family commitment and had to stay home.   So, I got a girl’s weekend all to myself with my Lil B complete with shopping, brunch, day drinking, and new hair!!

First things first, I got to town and got to spend several hours with my hair stylist at High Maintenance salon with enough tin foil in my head to channel alien life forms!  I love getting my hair done in Rapid because I’ve been going to see the owner of HM since I was in college. She knows my hair, and she never fails to deliver amazingness.

I tend to have hair style ADHD, but she always can narrow in and find something gives me a change and a boost without being crazy and out of control.

I mean…..saying that I was a bit all over the place this time is maybe an understatement. This is why, if you’re like me, you need a stylist who can wade through all the random ideas and crap you throw at her.

I am now blonde for the summer, with a cute little shadow root so that it grows out nicely. Because let’s be real, despite the fact that the salon I’m ride or die for is called High Maintenance, I’m really pretty low maintenance about keeping my hair in its tippy top condition. I mean, you all read the blog and now I haven’t been out to get my hair done since November. That level of commitment isn’t conducive to fun fashion colors, crazy undercuts, and all the other random things I think I need.

(As I’m writing this though, my hair has possibly become more dry shampoo than hair, and I’m wondering if I can pull it together for brunch in a couple hours without looking like a total slime ball…….hmmm. Well, the blonde does always look less greasy than dark brunette, so I’ve atleast got that going in my favor!!!)

I arrived at Lil B’s cute new house, and we of course proceeded to start drinking……that’s how you make the best plans after all.  I hadn’t eaten, so we eventually decided that we needed to get food.  While Lewie’s is my go to option when I’m in Lead, Friday nights are trivia nights, and we decided it would be too busy.  So, we went somewhere new, The Roundhouse!  Well, it’s not really new at all since it’s an old train building that’s been converted into a gorgeously fancy restaurant, but I had never been there before.

We got to sit in private old rail car, Lil B had prosciutto stuffed duck breast, and I got to drink wine out of what was quite possible the largest wine glass in existence!! I desperately need a set of these glasses for my home life so that I can wander around sipping cheap wine…..in sweat pants…..with my dog while still feeling fancy as fuck!

Honestly, it was like staring into a crystal ball and finding out your future was going to come up wine. That kids, is a future I can be all about!!

Look deep into the orb, and see your future!  Hint…..it’s Malbec!

We stopped at the dive bar on the way home but it was dead and we were exploding with food so we came home and passed out talking in the living room. Nothing screams classy like two grown women waking up in a living room.

Saturday morning started as all mornings should with coffee, eggs, and bitching with your bestie about how much you just hate all the random things!  The bitching got better when we decided that 11am was an acceptable time to start drinking…..so I whipped up a pitcher of cheap champagne with the addition of a raspberry lambic.  It’s a fun sorta spin on a mimosa only with the added benefit of not diluting your booze with juice!

I’m not sure how people drink this as it is, because it’s really thick and tastes essentially like raspberry syrup. They make other flavors, so if raspberry isn’t your thing you can still rock out any of the flavors with a bottle of the cheapest champagne you can find.

We decided that we needed to get out of the house so we got ready and went shopping in Rapid, because let’s be honest……you can shop and bitch…..it’s like a more intense version of power shopping.

Halfway to Rapid we decided that we should also swing through Prairie Berry Winery for some fun and some free samples. Basically, we spent most of the afternoon shopping and cruising the highways of the Black Hills, and frankly that was ok by me!

We shopped for a bit.  I got some new sandals for vacation with the Main Squeeze, and some snacks for the trip down to the winery. The winery was super busy, much more so then the last time I was there with Momm and my sister, but we did eventually squeeze ourselves into the bar for our samples. I have to say I was slightly disappointed by the size of the wine glasses…I guess once you’ve had the best everything else is just sad haha!

We purchased some wine and both somewhat accidentally got signed up for their autoshipments of wine. Oopsy, well I can pick up my wine at their East River location, and more wine never hurt anyone so we will see how this turns out.  See….I need those huge glasses so that I can drink my autoship wine more effectively!!!!

After the winery, we finally hit up Lewie’s so I could get my bacon cheeseburger with jalapeños fix! Once again exploding with food, Lil B and I headed home for some Netflix and a couple drinks. This time though, we did both actually make it through the first show…..the second one, not so much!

This morning I decided against a shower, but I did throw on a sundress and head back to Rapid for brunch with my favorite Russian and her new hubby!  It was delicious, amazeballs, and so good to see them again.  I feel like I just don’t get enough of these people that I got so used to seeing everyday in college.  The whole situation was so nice that I totally forgot to grab my credit card after I paid.  Luckily, I discovered the problem when I arrived at Philly Ted’s for my quota of cheesesteaks to bring home and freeze.  A quick trip back to Tally’s Silver Spoon got me my credit card back, and I was ready to hit the road home.

All in all, it was an amazing trip, and I can’t wait till I can find a weekend to head back, and hopefully bring the Main Squeeze along.  Now kids, I’m home….and it’s time to wash my hair!

A New Year with the Bear Cubs

Well here we are kids, the first blog of the new year!  I feel like I should have some sort of deep, philosophical wisdom to impart, but I don’t really.  I’m not usually one for setting resolutions  Personally I think they just lead to disappointment.  So, this is my new mantra….

I did spend an awesome New Year’s weekend out in the hills with most of my favorite girls.  I stayed out in a cabin with my Chem Smarty Pants and The Boys…..and the bear cubs……fucking bear cubs ruining our groove!  I know that you’re probably thinking to yourself, “I love bear cubs!  They are adorable, and I just want to squeeze them!”  I have those same feelings about actual bear cubs.  These however, were not regular, cute bear cubs.  These were annoying, basement room stealing, underage so no you may not come to the bars with us, semi weird, and demanding bear cubs.

The saga begins with The Cubs and The Boys car pooling to the Hills from Nebraska.  Now, unbeknownst to everyone else, the Bear Cubs had to go back to Nebraska a day early…..they knew…..AND JUST DIDN’T TELL ANYONE!  So there we all are, having a grand time, and it had to get cut short because of the cubs. To add extra annoyance to the situation, the cubs didn’t help us clean up at all.  They basically cleaned up their little basement cave, came upstairs, sat on the couch, and watched everyone else work.    This cause Lil B and I to have to run a reconnaissance mission for half a pan of lasagna and some snacks because our group lunch trip to Lewie’s threw off their cleaning groove.  Youths…..I’m telling ya!

These sassy cubs at least fake taking out the garbage!

However, we all still had an amazeballs time and the bear cubs aren’t gonna ruin that.  I got to go to dinner with my Lil B and her family Saturday night, and I attempted to teach her littlest to play tic tac toe……it went…..decently haha.  Saturday night I spent in Rapid with my Sexy Russian and her fiancee, so the weekend was a success.  Actually, it was one of the more successful trips I’ve had out there in a long time.

The other plus side of being in the Hills was that I didn’t see anyone I didn’t want to see and I ate Lewie’s twice….so gym time fun time for me in the new year!

My old phone was mostly on the fritz the whole time I was there, so I didn’t get that many pictures taken.  I did have a new phone waiting for my at Momma’s, but the case hadn’t arrived and I didn’t wanna chance dropping a brand new phone during our shenanigans.

When you’re tall and Paul cuts off your head…..still better than the first picture of just our boobs……boys!

When you’re being tipsy and mysterious behind your phones…..it’s like modern societies version of the fan.  I know I know….I was keeping it super classy with the PBR, but you’ll also notice that we had lots of water glasses.  With age comes wisdom, and with wisdom comes hangover avoidance strategies!

Ahh the Social Club, always a solid choice!

We have no pictures of the boys, and no pictures of the dancing that took place downstairs.  Just as well honestly, cuz it was sorta a hot, sweaty, crowded mess.

We finally caught a cab back to the cabin around 3, and then proceeded to make pizza, drink champagne, and dance around the kitchen until about 5am!!!  Our New Year’s Eve was really one of those nights that makes you feel like you need a vacation from your vacation!!
