Restorative Weekend at Home

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve had a weekend at home with just me and my Scout-a-Roo.

Even though the Bitch Face Bestie and the Hubby in Law took excellent care of my baby girl while I was gone on vacation, Scout’s been a bit clingy since I’ve gotten home, so I’m sure she’s been appreciating the extra cuddle time.

I meant to get my yard cleaned up a bit for fall, but it’s been cold and drizzly, so I didn’t get any of that done.  Hahaha….ooopsy!  Maybe tomorrow night, the dried up veggie plants can go out with the garbage.

I did however get my kitchen and bathroom scrubbed down and cleaned up!!  It’s amazing…it’s not like it really takes that long once you get down to it, but I just can’t seem to ever motivate myself to do it during the week after I get home from work.  When Momma was here a few weekends ago she was vacuuming for me and declared that I needed to scrub my baseboards.  I don’t ever recall ever scrubbing baseboards at home growing up, but mine are dark and I suppose the dust shows more…….. :/  So, in an effort to be a responsible home owner, I scrubbed all my baseboards and dusted!  Someone should be proud of me!

Friday night was a Halloween housewarming party at BFB and Hubby in Law’s new house!  I was a vodka bottle for the…..second, maybe third……year in a row!  I mean, if the $20 dress still fits you might as well wear it right?!  I decided this year that I would amp up the makeup a bit.  I found an inspiration video online that was a fortune teller…..and I decided to make myself a glamazon of a Svedka bottle!  I’ve included the link because @alyssamarieartistry is amazeballs, and everyone should watch her Halloween look!

First, you gotta practice…….

Then you just gotta commit and go for it!

img_7265

The party was so fun, and it was great to get out and see everyone!  Even though I got put to work finishing up decorating when I got there and had to ditch my 5 inch heels…..I’m easily appeased with yummy snacks and some of BFB’s homemade cake!

These are my people…..and I love them!

(Also, I’m barefoot in all these pics…..I have a collection of miniature friends!)

I didn’t get any landscaping done this weekend, but I did get dinner made for BFB and the Hubby in Law last night.  I cleaned and workout out yesterday, and then took dinner over to their house so we could all watch Game 4 together with all the fur babies!  I have yet to turn on my heat, so I’ve been relying primarily on my oven to keep the house at a cozy-ish temperature.

Plus, if you wanna talk about restoring your soul, there is nothing better than fresh outta the oven buns with butter.  Life doesn’t get any better than that!  Warm buns will make you happier than anything else ever could!  Buns, corn chowder, grilled cheeses, and bloody marys made for a pretty excellent Saturday night if I do say so!  I’m excited that the weather has started to change so that soup and fresh bread can start making a comeback into my life!

Today has been yoga, coffee, snuggles, and laundry.  It’s been nice to just chillax at home, relax, and recharge.  After vacation is always a stressful time at work because the samples don’t stop arriving because I leave for a few days.  After running around like a headless chicken in the lab all week, relaxing with mugs of coffee and tea while candles burn and Scout snores has been just what the doctor ordered I think!

Hope everyone has been having an excellent, and safe, Halloween weekend!

Weekend Fix #3 and New Favs

Last Thursday I got my 3rd Stitch Fix box.  I somehow missed the email from them saying that my box was being styled and asking for any input, so this box was a total mystery!  I had no idea what was going to arrive.  It was an all day monsoon on Thursday when the package got delivered.  Luckily, I happened to have my storm door unlocked, which isn’t normal for me.  I would have had to wait all weekend for my pieces to dry out before I would have been able to try them on!

img_6954

I can’t even tell you how long I have wanted a plaid, pencil skirt!  Ugh….I so wanted to like this, and I kind of did.  However, it’s a tiny bit too small, and I think I’d prefer a slightly longer style.  For the price, $88, I just couldn’t keep it because it wasn’t totally perfect.

img_6938

I’ve finally decided that I like my booty and hourglass hips in a pencil skirt….which is a huge win for me, but that pucker situation though…..not worth the money!

img_6955

Again, I really wanted to like these, but there was just too much not quite right about them to justify the price.  While they were a flattering cut and actually long enough for me, they gap slightly in the back because I’m too curvy for them.  They were fairly high waisted on me, which isn’t my favorite feeling for everyday wear, and I’m not sure how much use I would get out of “trouser cut” jeans.  I’m just not that fancy.  I would just as soon take the money, $88, I would have spent on keeping these, and spend it on regular jeans that fit me better.

img_6957

There’s nothing wrong with these earrings, other than the price.  I like them just fine, I just don’t feel like there are worth $38.  I feel like I could find a similar style to this at stores in town for significantly less money.

img_6958

Fairly nondescript, black turtle neck.  I’ve never been a fan of turtle necks….I’ve had a couple through my life that I liked, but generally they are never my go to items.  It fit, and the sleeves were long enough…..but it was just too blah to keep for $64.

img_6959

Cute and comfy long sleeve t-shirt is the item I’m keeping.  After my $20 styling credit, the shirt costs $34.  It has a cute pink zipper detail all up the back, and the sleeves are long enough for me!

Little back zipper!

On to a couple of my favorite new makeup products!  A girl can never have too much makeup!!!

23bf1270-80ac-0133-90c0-0e17bac22e39

I’m not sure if these are new…but they are new to me, and I love them!  I’ve seen some mixed reviews, but I have three….two full sized and one deluxe sample, and I love them all!  They dry down super matte, but I don’t find them drying.  They mostly last all day on me even eating and drinking totally as normal.  Even if they wear a little, I find it super easy to just touch up any faded areas.  AND…..they smell like mint and go on with a slight tingle….love it!

The lip paint colors I own are…..

Rave — Greigey Brown

Namaste — Pinky Nude (This is pink on me, but my lips have a lot of color in them naturally.  It might be lighter “nude” on other people)

Hangry — Berry (Deluxe sample size)

If you’re going to wear fancy lips, you need to make sure they stay looking fresh.  I love this lipliner!  It’s clear so it works with any color you own, and it keeps your lips crisp all day.  Without liner, my oily skin causes lip products to bleed out on me all the time.  This liner keeps everything in place for all day wear!

Breaking Up is the Hardest Part

Literally and figuratively, my trusted foundation and I are on the outs.  I’m not sure if this is an issue that happens to people with normal skin, if my foundation is just sick of my shit, or if sometimes you just need to switch things up so your body doesn’t become too used to something.

This…..this is all we want!  Why does it have to be so hard to achieve?!?

I’m really not sure what the problem is or where it came from.  I’ve worn the Bare Minerals powder foundation since….IDK FOREVER!  I probably started using it in high school, and it’s been my go to foundation ever since.  It was obviously working for me here, or I wouldn’t have told you it was my ride or die foundation!  Then, the break up started……  I would put my foundation on like usual, and it would always look really good to start.  About an hour later, disaster would start.  It would slowly start breaking up into chunky awfulness on my face, always just down my nose, around my mouth, and the center of my forehead.  It would start to look like I just had something sitting on my face.  It was drawn to anything that wasn’t my actual face.  Phones, my glasses, Main Squeeze’s nose…..basically it wanted to be anywhere that wasn’t my face!!  Also, it would turn much lighter than my actual skin tone and just generally looked like a hot, hot mess.

How I look with my makeup going into oil slick breakdown mode.

I headed straight to Sephora, and I tried everything I could think of to get my old foundation to set better.  I have the larger holiday pots, so in an effort to not be wasteful and high maintenance feeling, I was determined to make it work.  I bought primers, brush cleaner, different moisturizer, tried different ways of applying it, using more, using less…..nothing was working.  Luckily, Sephora has a good return policy and they will give you free samples.  It’s a good pro tip if you want to try things or you’re having struggles similar to mine.

No Ariel….I just want the stuff I have to work!!!  Although I did buy myself two new lip products out of sadness…..NEW SUMMER COLORS!

I did finally bite the bullet and I bought a new foundation.  I’m trying out the new Bare Minerals BARESKIN liquid foundation.  I’m actually really enjoying it, and my skin seems to be enjoying it much more as well.  Even at the end of the day, my face still just looks like my skin, but in the best way possible.  I no longer have a floating oil slick of foundation hanging out on my face.

I do still feel a bit overly dramatic about having multiple varieties of foundation, and soon I’ll have to buy another color for summer.  But, I mean your face is what the world sees and what you see every time you look in the mirror.  If spending a bit of money changes the way you feel about what you see in a positive way, then in my mind that’s money well spent.  I mean…..you know what they say, “Put your best face forward!”  I know the quote is usually feet, but my feet are huge and are always forward even if I don’t want them to be, so I decided to switch it up!

Things Oily Girls Know to be True

Sometimes it’s hard to be an oily girl in the wonderful world of makeup.  While the majority of your friends are struggling to find a decent moisturizer, your off buying stock in blotting papers and praying your eyeliner stays were it belongs!  As an oily girl, I feel your struggle!!  I thought it would be fun to have some of my favorite makeup artists and YouTube stars help explain the struggle.  They have better facial expressions than I ever could hope for, plus they are pros who just know how to get the job done!  You can admire their flawless makeup while you contemplate the struggles!  Hopefully, these make you giggle…….whether you’re oily or not!  In order of appearance:

What’s In My Makeup Bag?!

Since I was recently in the Hills with the girls, and we spent a lot of time talking about makeup….I’m sure the boys were thrilled…..I decided I’d write up a “What’s in my Makeup Bag” post.  Granted, makeup is not a one size fits all situation, and everyone has their specific things, but it just seemed like something fun to write.  I have really oily skin.  It isn’t really what I’d call sensitive, but I am prone to breakouts.  These are the tips, tricks, and products that work well for me.  They probably wouldn’t work well if you have dry skin, but that’s why small pieces of heaven like Sephora and Ulta exist, so everyone can get what they need for their skin type.

Brushes

IMG_5417

Here they are….in all their dirty, sorta worn out glory!

I know that everyone says that using good brushes is key.  I mean the best foundation in the world will still look like butt if you paint it on with your fingers.  Last year I wrote that I was going to try being responsible and save up money for new makeup brushes.  Welp, I didn’t!  So, most of my brushes are very old and not high quality.  I have:

  • A set of 3 eyeshadow brushes I was given when I graduated college
  • A large, poofy fan brush for highlighting from Walmart, I believe the brand is Eco Tools
  • A blush brush I’ve had since high school
  • A Bare Minerals Kabuki brush for foundation and powder
  • A nice eyeliner brush from Sephora for those days when I feel like slicing people with a wing
  • A cheap concealer brush that I use to set my underage concealer
  • A large powder brush I occasionally use to blend out blush and bronzer or apply all over powder if I get too oily
  • A very old eyeliner brush that I use to fill in my brows.

All in all, it’s sorta a sad situation.  However, they work, and I’ll maybe make more of an effort to start collecting some nicer brushes.  All my girl friends have nice brushes in nice brush rolls, and it makes me a bit jelly honestly!

Face Prep

I use my Clarisonic Mia at night with the acne brush head and the Peter Thomas Roth 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Acne Wash, and then I moisturize with Burt’s Bees Sensitive Lotion.  If I’m feeling old I might throw on my Bliss Fabulous Everyday Eye Cream, but generally I forget.  When the winter weather starts getting particularly harsh, I’ll add couple drops of Josie Maran Argan Oil to my nightly moisturizer.  I know it sounds super counter-intuitive for oily, acne prone skin, but trust me….happily oiled and moisturized skin is much better for your acne.  I’ve been using the same skin care routine for a couple years now, and my skin is so much better than it used to be.

In the mornings I just wash my face with a dime sized amount of coconut oil.  This makes Scout super happy because she gets a little glob of oil to get her day started.  She has bad joints and it’s supposed to help….idk, but she likes it and it’s part of our morning routine now so that’s that.  In the winter I will throw a small amount of the Burt’s Bees lotion under my makeup because SoDak winters can be brutal on your skin.  In the summer though I find that the coconut oil does enough.

“Eskewz me, I iz here for my morning morsel….k thankz!”

I have a few different face masks, but my all time favorite is GlamGlow Super Mud Clearing Treatment.  It’s expensive!!!….but, it’s tough enough to clear up acne spots, but gentle enough that it doesn’t stress out my skin. It’s a must have for me!  I try and use it once a week, but I sometimes get lazy.  I also have the GlamGlow eye masks.  I’ve tried other GlamGlow masks and they are all very good, any would be a good choice depending on your skin.    If I get a particularly tenacious breakout, I’ll use the Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick on it and that really dries them out and clears them up quickly.

Makeup: The Base

These are the products I use everyday!  I have some different things that I will use occasionally, but these are my ride or dies and the things that I always repurchase.  These form the base that all the rest of my “fun” makeup goes on top of!  I’ve listed them in the order I use them in the mornings, after I’ve washed my face.

Concealer – Bare Minerals Correcting Concealer in Light 1

Foundation – Bare Minerals Mineral Foundation in Fairly Light or Medium Beige

Powder – Bare Minerals Original Powder (Just over the T-Zone)

Under Eye Concealer/Highlight – Garnier Clearly Brighter Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller

Setting Powder – Rimmel London Stay Matte Pressed Powder in Transparent (For setting under eyes or taking down oil over the whole face at the end of the day.)

Brows – Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo in Dark Brown

Bronzer/Contour – Rimmel London Natural Bronzer in Sun Light

Blush – Nars Orgasm

Highlight – Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer in Tiki (I know its a “bronzer” but it has no color really only highlight.  I would never use it as a bronzer….you’d be covered in shimmer.)  I also have Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light.  I’ll occasionally use it as a highlighter or a more all over powder if I feel like I need a special boost.  They seem super hokey until you put them on, and then it’s just like a Ta-Da moment!  They are also a good choice for oily skin as they aren’t super shimmery.  If I wear a straight up highlighter, like a Becca Champange Pop, I sorta look like I’ve rubbing my face on a stripper within 20 minutes.  I just get way too much shine going on!!

Mascara – Maybelline’s Volume Express: The Falsies Flared and Volume Express: The Mega Plush, both in blackest black. (I have baby eyelashes so I wear multiple coats of both….EVERYDAY!)

Eyeshadow Primer – Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original or Sin….just depends what tube I grab.

Setting Spray – Urban Decay All-Nighter or De-Slick…I can’t really tell a difference between them, but I do think they help my makeup stay where I put it.

Makeup: The Fun

Ahhhh the fun stuff.  These are the products I love, but they change everyday.  Eyeshadows, lip glosses, eyeliner….these really “make the look”!

Eyeshadows – I own mostly all Urban Decay shadows.  They just seem to work for me better than most other brands.  I own the Naked 2 palette and the new Gwen Stefani palette.  I also got a free mini palette of purpley gray neutrals.  Between those three, I feel pretty much set…..for now…..  I tend to stick to a pretty neutral eye, but it’s almost always smoked out and dark.

Lip Products – I don’t think you can ever have enough lip products.  A different lip can change the whole look of you makeup!  I’ll just list off my current favs, but I own plenty more beyond this list!

  • OCC Lip Tar in Interlace
  • Gerard Cosmetics Lip Stick in 1995
  • Urban Decay Revolution Lip Gloss in Apocalypse
  • Fresh Sugar Lip Balm—-sometimes you need a natural look
  • Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Melted Chihuahua (I didn’t pick the name!)
  • Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in Samantha—perfect to add gloss and some plump over any other lip product

Liners – My go to liner is Sephora brand Nano Eyeliner pencil in black.  I’ve also really been loving the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils.  They seem to stay on my oily face longer than the Sephora one, even if I don’t use a primer under them.  I have two that came as samples, one is a dark gold and the other is a dark-gray purple.  Once my current black liner runs out I’ll be buying a black 24/7 Glide On pencil.  I seem to be sensing an Urban Decay trend in my makeup!

Makeup Shaming….Could We Just Stop Please!?

I know I’ve already written a blog that vaguely addressed this issue, but since it’s become popular again I decided to revisit the issue.  I’m not sure what everyone’s problem with makeup is lately, but they should probably just get over it! People have recently started #makeupshaming on Instagram, and the other night I was bored and decided to lend my face to the cause.  The basic premise is that women can use makeup as a tool to present themselves however they want to the world.  Granted, my phone takes horrible pictures, and I’m in no way a professional makeup artists, but here’s me with and without makeup.  Equally fine either way, but sometimes you just want a contour and some fake eyelashes!

Should have maybe gone with a colored lip....but I do love me a good nude lippy!

Should have maybe gone with a colored lip….but I do love me a good nude lippy!

Just me!

Just me!

Now I understand men being annoyed about it….I mean let’s be real for a minute.  If a guy wakes up looking like butt, that’s the best he’s gonna look for the whole day.  If I wake up wearing the battle scars of the party the night before, I can fix that shit.  A little bit of concealer and some mascara go a long, long way my friends!  (I would argue that guys always wake up good looking…..it’s magic/science/voodoo that I do not and will never understand) PS- I’m not saying guys can’t or shouldn’t wear makeup….you do you boos!  Generally speaking, makeup is more popular with women….that’s all I’m saying!

....I really think this face speaks for itself....

….I really think this face speaks for itself….

Women bashing other women for running around in makeup is something I can’t understand.  We all face enough problems in life without having to deal with crap from each other about eye shadow!  Can’t we all just rally together and be supportive?!?!  If I get up and put on makeup every day I do it for myself….it’s my me time, my chance to make myself into the best self I can be that day, and my time to drink coffee and dance to Pandora in my bathroom!  If I don’t put makeup on, it’s because I slept in….or I just didn’t care….or I slept in because I didn’t care.

Don't hate the player....hate the game! #makeupshaming #samepersondifferentmood

Don’t hate the player….hate the game! #makeupshaming #samepersondifferentmood

I was told I was too vain the other day, because I showed up for a bike ride with straight hair and makeup on.  Earth to the world….I didn’t get all glammed up to workout, but I’m certainly not gonna take the time to un-glam to work out either.  I look the way I look on the daily because I wanted to look that way.  Yes, it might be because I want to make a good impression, in this case it was because we were being audited at work.  I run errands with or with out makeup…..my life is my life, and my makeup is something I use to accent that life when I want to.

On an unrelated side note….I went on a date last night….it seems promising….I’ll keep you posted! 🙂

I Didn’t Get This Far Just By Looking Good

I don’t remember a lot of specific details about my Dad’s mom.  I have memories for sure, I just don’t really have a firm grasp on her personal character.  She died when I was in 3rd grade after a lengthy battle with cancer.  I have several bones to pick with cancer about it’s continued harassment of my family, but that’s something for another day.  What I do have of my Grandma are the things she left behind: a gorgeous punch bowl, some fancy silver serving pieces which are sprinkled all over my new home, and Irish roots to blame my temper on.  She also left behind an odd little wall hanging that hung beside my bedroom door all through college. It looks a bit like something you might find at a garage sale, or even throw away, but it says something very important to me, “I didn’t get this far just by looking good.” Even though my Grandma didn’t live to see me graduate high school, attend college, and grow into the person I am today, her little wall hanging has stuck in the back of my mind and has my own personal mantra.

I’m always amazed and slightly frustrated when people who meet me come to the “revelation” that I’m a smart girl.  WHY WOULD YOU AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME I’M NOT SMART?!?!  Just because I like makeup and I’m pretty doesn’t mean I’m dumb.  Maybe I’m biased, because I’ve always run with the ‘smart’ crowd, but the only women I know are smart, beautiful, and strong.  None of my girlfriends got to where they are now just because they are pretty!!  Does being pretty help??  Yes..yes it does.  Studies have shown that women who go to job interviews with their hair and makeup done receive higher starting salaries.  Great…..I can deal with that I guess.  Part of being smart is knowing how to leverage yourself and your assets.  Throw on an killer bra, some good lipstick, feel good about yourself, and go get those jobs!  I support this, but what I don’t support is people thinking I’m less intelligent just because I can wing my eyeliner.

Clearly we all kicked some Chemistry butt with our make up on and everything!

Clearly, you can rock out lab reports while wearing makeup.  We can’t be the only three to have accomplished that amazing feat!

Two of the toughest girls I know. I'm proud to call them besties even though they don't run around without makeup on.
